On November 30, 1991, the U.S. National Women's Soccer Team won the first Women's World Cup. Michelle Akers, who scored 10 goals in the tournament including both goals in the final game, earned Most Valuable Player of the final. Another U.S. forward, Carin Jennings Gabarra, earned Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The team's captain, April Heinrichs, rounds out the trio dubbed “the triple-edged sword."
